Oberammergau & the 2010 Passion Play
The history of the Oberammergau Passion Play began back in 1633. During the Thirty Years' War, after much suffering and death caused by the plague, the surviving population of Oberammergau vowed that they would perform the play of the suffering, death and the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ every ten years if they were spared from extinction. At Whitsun in 1634 they kept their promise for the first time. Nowadays the 5000 inhabitants of the village play host to just under half a million visitors who make the pilgrimage to see this world famous religious festival. All of the cast live in the village and preparations for each performance commences eight years previously. The Passion Play is performed on an open air stage from May to September starting in the afternoon and resuming in the evening following a three hour interval. The 2010 production is being directed under the watchful eye of Christian Stuckl and the music composed by Markus Zwink and Michael Bocklet.
We are able to offer various travel options to incorporate the Passion Play, from tailor-made itineraries, group travel, coach, rail or air combining various durations, stops and a choice of accommodation.
