Going on safari can be as exotic or wild as you like and accommodation style is vast ranging from staying in tents in bush camps or in some wonderfully luxurious lodges with all the facilities and comforts of the modern world.
There are an unparalleled variety of safari options to choose from and it is a popular choice to combine safari with a beach resort. Africa's vast diversity presents some distinctively unique safari experiences from the private game reserves in South Africa, the wetlands of the Okavango Delta, the remote wilderness of Zambia, to the jungles of Uganda. A Safari experience is never the same two days running, reflecting the constant moving picture of the wild. The game drives start with the rising dawn when the animals are more active in the cooler, early morning and by around 9am the heat of the day is increasing and so they tend to rest more. Take another drive in the evening when the animals become more active as the heat subsides.
It is an exhilarating experience, rising early and climbing into a 4x4 safari vehicle to go in search of the Big Five, perhaps a lion chasing antelope, buffalo at a water hole, elephant or rhino grazing, or a leopard sleeping in a tree. Then it's back to the lodge for breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea before setting off again on an evening game drive in the bush to spot the animals in the wild at sundown. On your return the day's events can be discussed over fine food and wine in an open air boma perhaps. An early night ensures readiness for another early start the following morning.
Choosing a safari is a very personal decision, but the two main aspects to consider are the wildlife you would like to see and the type of accommodation you require. Lodges range from colonial style comfort, to safari chic where deluxe facilities such as wine cellars, swimming pools, gymnasiums and spas are provided, whilst old style luxury camping can also be experienced in the bush.
South Africa is an excellent destination to combine safari with culture, fine dining and luxurious accommodation, whereas Uganda is well known for gorilla tracking, Zambia, considered by many to be the most natural safari destination in Africa is known for its walking safaris and Botswana, to many, is the ultimate safari destination because it offers an unrivalled array of wilderness from the famous Chobe elephant herds to mokoro rides along the waterways of the Okavango Delta. Which destination to choose is such a difficult decision given that each one has its own gems to offer.
